Barker College Kurrajong Prep School

We designed the new Kurrajong Prep School playspace for junior pupils aged five to eight as part of the grand masterplan at Barker College. The brief was to create a unique playspace for this age group “with a lasting magic in its legacy”. We worked closely with the staff and architects to achieve this; it was a truly enjoyable process for the Umbaco team.

Our attention to detail made all the elements so much more interesting than a regular, off the shelf playground. Play houses have blackboards, there is a tunnel with crawling lizards, ladders that children enjoy climbing, “walking clouds” where children sitting snugly in or tiny playhouses designed to fit just the little ones. There is also a large cubby house with a slide, a challenging climbing wall, a central rope vortex and fire pole to one side which connects level 1 with a cool rope bridge. An “Aussie cubby’ has a wrap-around veranda with a little shop front and a colourbond roof. A highlight of the play space is a water play element winding through gardens, bound by rocks leading into more climbing activities. All this is built over a new carpark.

The only issue is – children do not want to leave this play space.
